Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Communications, the Communication Officer will assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating communication strategies to raise awareness of food security issues, strengthen political will, and enhance WFPโ€™s credibility and brand in Ethiopia.

Key Accountabilities

Media Relations

  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists/media outlets (print, TV, radio, web).
  • Draft press releases, speeches, and key messages.

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Track and report on communication efforts to ensure impact and continuous improvement.

Content Development

  • Produce high-quality communication materials (newsletters, briefs, fact sheets, videos, photos).
  • Generate donor-specific visibility content for digital platforms.

Events & Branding

  • Organize visibility events (handovers, agreement signings) with stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with WFPโ€™s branding and marking guidelines.

Capacity Building & Collaboration

  • Train WFP staff on communication best practices.
  • Partner with UN agencies and government on joint SDG communications.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, or related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year in communications (UN/international humanitarian experience preferred).
  • Desirable:
    • Specialist communications techniques (media, digital).
    • Videography/graphic design skills.

Skills

  • Strong media relations and content creation.
  • Understanding of multilateral/interagency dynamics.

Language

  • Fluency (Level C) in English.
